Cultivating Groundedness

for Personal Wellbeing and Social Transformation

A perspective held by many shamanic traditions is that the Earth is an alive and sacred being who dreamt life here into existence. According to this perspective, each human being was dreamt here and is known by Earth. Connection to Earth, therefore, is the opportunity to be linked to the Dream of our life, the original blueprint of who we are before we took on patterns of survival and performance.

Being grounded allows for a sense of calm and belonging. But being grounded is also a choice to relate to ourselves as Earth sees us. Being grounded we are choosing to surrender to what Earth dreamt for our lives, to be in a daily relationship with our essence. Grounding makes it safe for our authenticity to take up residence within us and become--more and more--the shaper of our days. Grounding is necessary if we want the movement of ourselves to be toward a beautiful vision, rather than away from what is not working.

Grounding brings us the wisdom of manifestation, that is, how to create in our lives in a way that is good for all life. So many beautiful people I have known have been afraid to use their power. They have witnessed the abuse of power and do not trust that they can wield the powers of creativity, collaboration, and expression, without doing damage. This is a very real and rational fear. But staying in this paralysis of not using power is ultimately another form of its misuse. When we are grounded, we choose to step into the energetic state in which we can trust ourselves to manifest. We link to and align with the Earth’s dream of human life lived in balance. We link to the Earth’s dream of our own power expressed as love in action.

Grounding brings us to the present, where we can sense moment to moment how love wants to express in our lives.

Grounding is a political act. To own our right to be here and take up space--without righteousness--requires grounding. To step with a courageous heart into the public sphere and make wise decisions for the common good requires grounding.

Grounding is…

  • An energetic state that can be practiced

  • A connection to a sense of being safe, of belonging, and of being seen that is ours no matter our circumstances

  • An expression of our desire to be alive and in our bodies

  • Essential for our capacity to stand for our principles without being righteous

  • A state that makes us trustworthy to ourselves and others

  • Protection from taking on others’ energy or energetic overwhelm

  • Soothing to the nervous system, calming to the emotions, and a way to stop spinning in our heads.
